Squid Salad

1 1/2 lb squid
1 yellow onion
1/4 teaspoon tumeric
3 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup chana dal[yellow pea] powder
3 tablespoon sesame seed
2 tablespoon finely minced cilantro
1/4 teaspoon crushed, dried chili pepper
2 tablespoon lime juice
1/4 cup sliced green onion

Clean the squid, slice the bodies cross-wise in 1/2" strips and place strips with the tentacles and 2 t salt in a bowl and mix until a foamy substance appears. Then rinse and drain. Fill a saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Add the squid and cook just 1 min. Drain and set aside. Cut the onion in half vertically and slice thinly to form crescent shaped fans. Heat 3 T oil in a frying pan, add onion and tumeric and saute until golden- 6 min. In another dry frying pan heat the chana dal powder , stirring constantly until light brown- 4 min. Set aside powder and toast sesame seeds, stirring, til brown and popping- 3 min. In a large bowl combine everything, mix and serve.

Yield: 4 servings
